John Maxwell wisely said, “It gets lonely at the top
when you do not bring people along with you.” We can add to this by saying, “An
unhappy leader has unhappy followers”.
When you bring out the best in others, you also bring out the
best in yourself. Effective leaders value every member of the team. They are
part of a team that builds, finds solution to problems, even in the most
difficult and stressful situations.
Team leaders are team players.
Here are the great leaders’ best practice:
1. Ensure that everyone is on the same page
* Be clear on the goals. Let
the achievements become a shared responsibility. (Better yet, involve key
people in goal setting. Make goals measurable
and time-bound).
* Be clear about one another’s roles and responsibilities in
the achievement of overall goals
2. Provide the proper
support
* Involve the team in
the whole process: planning, assessing,
finding solutions
* When issues arise, focus on the issues and solutions, not
personalities
* Properly assess the situation and solicit inputs on “what
went well,” “Areas for Improvement,” and “Key Learnings.” Point out
difficulties encountered that have caused problems, rather than pinpointing personalities.
* Identify concrete action points with corresponding
assignments to parties involved.
* Be open to dialogue
especially if issues are problems with attitude and personal concerns of
individuals. Talk to them in private. Involve them in finding solutions to the
problem.
*
Monitor the progress for areas that need improvement and keep them in the
loop on their progress.
* Challenge your team and provide rewards (not
necessarily monetary all the time).
* Acknowledge individuals for their efforts.
Articulate their concrete contribution.
*Training and development should be integral in the
system. Make everyone glad about the prospect of growing with the organization
and that their contribution is vital to company’s growth.
Be the leader that everyone loves to have and follow:
One who motivates and inspires, a leader who is
constructive and productive, a leader
develops who develops individuals into more effective leaders.
